Although the features are basic. The cover, man. WOW.

The DVD package is different from your generic cardboard folder sleeve. Its a cardbord folder that is as thick as a childrens book cover while the logo is embossed. The DVD cradle is lined with thet fuzzy white fiber that keeps it from getting scratched instead of it inserted in a separate plastic sleeve. Not bad for P80. Mukha siyang orig talaga.

I saw one more copy in Makati Square. Go get it while it's still there. The pirated DVD was in bangketas everywhere weeks before, but I opted to wait to see it in full cinema vision and sound. When I did get to finally see it last night I had just barely gotten well from a fever and the theater's aircon didn't help make me feel better. I had a splitting headache and, at one point was feeling so nauseous I thought I was gonna puke right on the theater seat. I was in no condition to be watching a movie and wouldnt be able to enjoy anything that I would be seeing.
The story of Crash revolves around the lives of different people of different social classes living in the Los Angeles area From the LA District Attorney's(Brendan Frasier) mansion in the Valley to the locksmith's duplex in the ghetto. They all live in this cramped city that they end up passing, bumping and at most times, running into each other (literally). Their lives are intertwined by a series of situations that lead them to make decisions that are either good or bad for the people around them. At times the consequences are devastating, but sometimes cause redemption. No character is completely bad and no character is completely good.

So what did I think of the movie?

Crash works a lot like Steven Soderbergh's Traffic. Only It's more closely knit.
Paul Haggis is an excellent storyteller. His technical and artistic skill in the craft of screenwriting is amazing nad thoroughly evident in this movie. The intertwining of the characters' stories must have taken him months and months to develop and rewrite, and I respect that. he pulls it off whith great skill and precision. There are barely, if any, loopholes in the plot and you'll see what I mean when you see it.

The performances are to be given proper credit as well. Don Cheadle, despite the distributed focus on the different characters in the movie, remains the obvious lead character and as always shines with his terrific performance as the good cop. Terrence Dashon Howard of the upcoming Hustle and Flow also shows some acting magic with his outstanding charisma and is being posed to be the next big African American movie star. Chris "Ludacris" Bridges gives a surprisingly fresh offbeat conflicted character as the black kid with white issues. He definitely stepped up a notch in my book after seeing him rationalize why buses have such big windows. Ryan Philippe surprised me as well with a downbeat but noteworthy performance. The most significant performance is in my book, by Matt Dillon as the racist police officer Sgt. Ryan. His character was central to the message the movie tries to convey about the necessity of taking a second look at people before passing judgement on them. You hate Dillon during some parts of the movie and love him on others. Truly a rare, difficult character perfectly cast and portrayed.

Some of the most significant parts of the movie that appealed to me were the use of analogies and parabolic symbolism. Lite the question the Daniel(Michael Pena), the locksmith's, daughter asked him about "how far bullets can go", in reference to their recent move from a dangerous gangbanger neighborhood to a 'safer' ghetto. Daniel replies "...not very far". It stops when it hits something." Another would be the the situation of the short-sighted Iranian storekeeper Farhad (Shaun Toub)who insists that his locks need to be changed. Daniel who is on call, changes the lock but doesn't help because the storekeeper needs a new door. Farhad argues that the lock is all that needs to be changed. Daniel ends up not charging him for the lock and walks away. This represents the lack of focus on the solutions for a problem. Sometimes we dont see the bigger picture and insist on quick fixes rather than permanent solutions.

An especially poignant scene in the middle end of the movie could have made it on My Favorite Tearjerking Scenes if I would have seen it earlier. I won't spoil it for you, but you'll know it when you see it.

Other reviews express how this movie sticks to you long after you leave the theaters. And it's true. The views on racism and bigotry are very well explored on both ends and are very well played out in the situations the characters get themselves in. It is also very well expressed that the only solution to the social problems borne of such diversity is acceptance and love.

Do yourself a favor. Watch Crash, and be nice to the bus conductor on the way home.

Rocketboy's Rating: ****(4 out of 5)

Movie Review; "Nobody Knows" (2005)

I have noticed that despite making regular movie reviews, I really dont have anything relevant to say about the movies I write about. Given the fact that I work at a call center ant can't give 100% attention to what I am doing, and given the fact that, sometimes...most of the times I'm just plain lazy. Well, now I intend to deviate from tha trend and will attempt to haul my lazy butt out of the lazy chair and give a substantial review worth reading. The subject...Hirokazu Koreeda's Nobody Knows.

Great Japanese films are a rare. You usually see the campy stuff in Quiapo like the Chambara, futuristic Hentai-inspired biker chick staple displayed in the stalls. Then there are the dramas that rarely get any attention because nobody really talks about them.

I first heard about this film from the KFCC forums. Nobody knows won the critical acclaim of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival jury and audience. The young lead actor Yûya Yagira got the best Actor Award that year too.

The plot outline is simple; "Four children are forced to rely on one another after they are abandoned by their mother", according to IMDB. Akira is an intelligent 12 year old boy with a flamboyant mother who bore four children from different fathers. They had just moved in to a new apartment where small children are not allowed , so the smaller kids are smuggled into the apartment (in a very simple but creative way) and told not to make noise or go out of the house lest they be seen by the landlords. The mother Keiko (played by Japanese pop icon YOU) seems to be engrossed in hooking up with a rich man to relieve her family from their current state of relative poverty, so she frequently goes out on dates with this man, sometimes leaving for days. To sustain the kids (who dont go to school and just stay home to do chores), she entrusts Akira to take care of his siblings and gives him money for groceries and utilities. The kids have different character traits. Kyoko (Ayu Kitaura) the oldest sister is reserved and ambitious. Shigeru (Hiei Kimura) who is a little autistic, is mischevous and tends to break the rules. The cute and adorable Yuki (Momoko Shimizu) just stays in one corner and well, acts cute. One day Keiko leaves her kids for a month, tells her kids that it had to do with work. The kids wait, and wait, and wait.

Akira does his best to stretch the budget and take care of the needs of the younger kids. Usually this would be a kid's dream; to be able to play with our own rules now that the grown ups are away. Akira is tempted at times to just break away from the responsibility (he is after all, just 12), but he soon realizes that there are consequences.

What really got me was he degeneration of the lifestyle the kids start to experience when their mother leaves them to the care of their young older brother. Although you have to give the boy credit. He did do a great job taking care of his siblings. His resourcefulness saved them from going hungry for days. The movie was shot within a period of , I believe, one year. The purpose is to show how the kids grow within the extended period since their mother left them. It is most evident in Akira, who is in the brink of puberty. You can see his stature getting thinner and more teen like and and his hair grow longer as the movie progresses.

Nobody Knows is a refreshing change of pace from the usual fast-paced summer blockbusters. It kind of tells you to stop and feel your surroundings for a while. Japanese filmmakers have a knack for giving a movie atmosphere and time to breathe for you to get immersed. Strangely, it really feels like you're in there with them, experiencing their hunger and feeling the heat due to the loss of power service which we who live in the Philippines, can relate to very well.
Give this movie a chance. You will not be sorry you saw it. There I guess that's enough info, now go get it before I spoil the ending.

Movie Review: "The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy "(2005), "Casshern" (2003)

I haven't been watching too many movies lately. Just my luck, two of
the last movies I saw sucked monkeyballs.

Dont't you just hate it when you wait for a movie for so long and your
expectations just get blown way larger than the movie can deliver? You
get to see the movie and wish you hadn't heard about it in the first
place, saving you the dissapointment.

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy was a promising sci fi spoof when
it first came out. Reminiscent of the old Monty Python movies,
Hitchhiker's Guide dabbles on obsurd subjects such as bringing towels with you
in case of an alien plot to destroy your planet while exploringmore
serious introspective themes such as the meaning of life. One thing that I
can say about it is that it may be better read (the original Douglas
Adams book) than seen.

Casshern had all the elements of a great visual feast. The special
effects are groundbreaking and the colors are beautiful...thats just about
it.

Everything else about it reeks of amateurism from the acting to the
unnecessarily slow pacing (in one scene,it took 15 minutes for the mother
of Casshern to know that her son died, a scene that could have been
accomplished in 30 seconds). Casshern could have been a great film, in all
fairness. The director Kazuaki Kiriya is more of a visual director
obviously, but that doesn't mean he can put a little meat in the story.

Zzzzzzzzzz....

Movie Review: "Unleashed" (2005)

Those who have been following my blog know how long I have been drooling for this movie. Unfortunately on opening day I was under a personal crisis and had to stay away from society and hide in the mountains to commune with my inner self and could not blog nor watch a movie. It sucks make a film review while your whole world is crashing in.
Anyway's I'm ok now and ready to go on with my digital life. But enough of my issues! lets geton to business.

Danny is a dog. Or at least he is treated like one by his owner Bart (Bob Hoskins). He is fed like one, kept like one and used for moneymaking (or grabbing) purposes as if he were a doberman on caffeine. He has on a collar that when taken off by his master serves as a stimulus indicator for him to 'unleash' his fury and kick major British tail. Then again, Danny is also a person--with fellings and dreams.
Danny's life takes an unexpected turn when his master gets into a 'run in' with his enemies and Danny is left to fend for himself. Like a dog without a master he is helpless and hungry, and like a hungry stray he is kept in by very unlikely but kind hearted Sam (Morgan Freeman), a blind piano tuner, and his pretty white stepdaughter Victoria (Kerry Condon), who treat him as family and help him unravel his past and unlearn his savage ways which are kept at bay by his eponymous collar. One day they ask him to remove the collar...

Nice huh? I like writing synopses like that. It relaxes me.

Needless to say, I do like the movie.

There are some things that Jet Li can do. Some we know, like making a triple flip kick land on a big burly guy's face and have time to spare to karate chop the other goon's shins. Some we don't, like actually doing some convincing acting. Apparently Li underwent serious acting coaching for Unleashed and even spent the night sleeping in a soundstudio to give him a feel of how it's like to be 'stored' instead of 'kept'. Li may not be a Sean Penn, but he does enough to do the job. Minimal speaking roles helps too since he is not a very good English speaker, and it kind of establishes him as an uneducated killing machine.
Bob Hoskins is particulary deliciously evil as Bart, the deceiving master of Danny. Thanks to him, the film has established a Snatch-type feel to it and fits perfectly in the same genre as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Layer Cake.
The fight scenes are particularly crude and primal compared to Yuen Wu-Ping 's usual fluid martial arts choreography. Here we see Li pounding on a goon like a mallet on meat Fight Club Style, pulling hair, and shattering shoulders with a sledge hammer. Not exactly Shaolin Kung Fu stuff. Since this is not, in the strictest sense of the word, a martial arts film,it works well in the vein of the british gangster flicks like Lock, Stock... and Layer Cake, only with cooler fighting sequences.
Luc Besson has written and directed some of the best action movies around like The Fifth Element, Le Femme Nikita, The Transporter and his masterpiece Leon: The Professional. Unleashed may not be a Leon, but it definitely keeps Besson up there a s one of the most creative action genre writers we have.

Dont miss this one. Its got more kicks than a mule being led to the slaughter, and its not just Jet Li.

I still prefer the European release title Danny the Dog. Apparently, American Movie executives think that the title sounded a little too "kiddy" and that parents might mistakenly take their precious little angels to an R13 gangster flick complete with bone-breaking and head smashing scenes. Of course we all know that Nixon never got killed but suffered a worse fate of becoming the most hated president of the United States. Assasination focuses on Samuel J. Bicke, father of three who is separated from his wife (Naomi Watts) and a reluctant furniture salesman. It focuses on Bicke's degeneration into desparation as that nothing ever goes well for him both socially and professionally. Despite his best efforts he is being put down by a government system that looms over him like a dark cloud and is keeping him from reaching the stars. he later realizes that the main root of his suffering is the incumbent leader of the system causing his suffering, who also happens to be the leader of the free world.

Assasination is first and foremost, a character study. This movie cannot avoid to be compared to Scorsese's Taxi Driver. Its a chronicle of a man reacting to his environment. Its like looking into a lab rat in a maze. As Bicke tries desparately to figure out how to resolve his predicament we see him lose touch with what's real, and Penn delivers this in absolute perfection.

Watts shines as the resentful ex wife Marie, who we know thinks secretly that her husband isn't really good enough for her even though she entertains her husband's silly ideas out of decency. Don Cheadle is 'da man', as he usually is as the even-minded best friend Bonny who sticks with Bicke through thick and thin.

The movie has a gritty realistic feel. Alfonso Cuaron, Leonardo Di Caprio and Alexander Payne helm the producers chairs on this one and lounge on them, if I may say so myself. This movie was well taken care of in the hands of director Niels Mueller.

Penn's performance in not as spectacular as in I Am Sam, nor as dramatic as in Mystic River. Its just, well, it's own thing. It's amazing how Penn just jumps into such diverse characters in such a short span of films. I saw I Am Sam and Assasintion almost back to back, I swear, what I saw were two different actors. Who cares if he can be an a-hole sometimes. Who cares if he gets offended and lashes immediately on offensive comments (Remember the Team America brouhaha and the Oscar 2005/Jude Law thing?), he is everything an actor should be and a lot of actors can only dream to be as good as he is.

This movie is very much well worth your buck. Penn never dissapoints!

Movie Review: "The Jacket" (2005)

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/suntoksabuwan/thejacket_bigadrien.jpg" alt="Where'd you go?" height-"200" width="200" align="left"> I watch a lot of movies. I usually make reviews of movies that are either obscure or what others consider irrelevant. There are thousands of blogs out there talking about the same movies> I try as much as possible to steer away from those movies (if possible) and try to review the small movies of world.

I haven't been out watching movies for a long time. It's been a busy time for me since I had been doing some extra work in the office after my shifts. I haven't had any time for myself for more than 3 weeks. Then I decided to take the time to watch a movie in G1.
Now let me tell you about The Jacket. But first, let me tell you about Adrien Brody.
Adrien Brody is an effective actor. "Effective" means that he is a well honed, well skilled tool for his director in helping him make a great script come to life. His physical features helped Roman Polanski bring across a weak but resourceful Jewish survivor in The Pianist. His erratic persona made him effective as the cocaine addicted photojournalist in Harrison's Flowers and the mentally retarded best friend in The Village. He may not have the same charisma as DeNiro, Cruise or Crowe, but he sure does make his director look good. In The Jacket, Brody plays Jack Starks, a Gulf War vet who gets shot in the head and survives but gets into a series of situations where he gets committed into a mental institution with a Frankenstein like doctor played by Kris Kristofferson who performs experimental 'simulation' procedures on his patients to 'correct' their behavior. Keira Knightley is Jackie Price, a woman from his alternate reality who is helping her solve the great mystery of his predicament.

I have to be honest, I have read one or two articles about The Jacket previously. When I actually got to see it, It wasn't the movie I expected it to be. Actually, the movie starts out as some sort of war-realted drama and has the feel of an independent human drama. Then it turns into a Seven-ish scratchy, blippy, synapse filled eye trip that could get you into an epileptic seizure.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/suntoksabuwan/adrien_brody1.jpg" alt="Can you scratch an itch for me?"height="150" width="200" align="left">
The story is very original and it doesn't have any of the overdone twist endings that are grossly overdone these days. It's a very effective drama/thriller as that it has both elements and they interplay with the story in a very realistic manner. I thought this was going to be another controversial Gulf War drama with political undertones, which was my original idea , however, early in the film it steers a totally different direction and totally abandons the war angle and concentrates on the uncanny adventures in the jacket he gets to wear and the 'box' he gets inserted into.
For some reason, this movie reminds me a lot of The Machinist, probably because it's darkly lit sets and the anemic looking protagonists of both movies, but for the most part because of the 'jumping' time dynamics of the story.
Don't look for any idealistic opinion-changing viewpoints here. Instead, enjoy it as it really is, a story of a man in an extraordinary circumstance that borders the paranormal, trying to find himself and gain true happiness.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/suntoksabuwan/jacket2.jpg" alt="Ma'am may I go out?"height="150" width="200">

"Long Live the Organization for the Organized!"

New Stuff for March

Not very much, but it does the trick!

Here they are...

New Stuff for February!

Tinatamad na akong magsulat. I have been very busy with the holidays and all. Plus one really sobering experience came my way while I was shopping for my spoils in Quiapo. I was just paying for my "It's All About Love" with a P100 bill when suddenly, I heard the loud chatter of the steel doors sutting down simulaneously. Everyone was frantically saving what was left of their wares from THAT morning's raid when they heard of the 'second wave' at around 6:00pm that same day. boxes started coming out, I was lost in a sea of 'Muslim' words, and possibly, expletives. children were running back and forth crying to their parents. I still didnt get my change. I gave up and just walked briskly the opposite direction with my DVD in hand and no change in my pocket.

Nakakaasar na nakakatuwa. I know I frequent the place and am shelling out really serious cash for something that is in many ways illegal. But I dont think that these raids are doing anyone,( merchant, buyer, government) any good. I like the idea of a really proactive government taskfore for once. I really didn't expect that VRB would be so vigilant in their efforts. But I'm afraid that they are barking on the wrong tree. Getting rid of video piracy through regular raids in Quapo, Divisoria, Greenhills and Makati Square is like pouring water into a pail with a hole.

Anyways here are some new titles to try out.

FACE- Another slow burn scarefest about a forensics reconstruction artist.

MY TUTOR FRIEND- Mala 'Sassy Girl' na story between a rich guy and the poor girl who has to tutor him. Many Korean Film enthusiasts claim that this is the best in it's genre (Korean Romantic Comedy or "romcom")next to "My Sassy Girl".

THE POLAR EXPRESS-Dream Team Bob Zemeckis and Tom Hanks in their first animated feature. I dont know pero di ma-appeal sa akin tong movi'ng to.

THE MACHINIST-I have been dying to see this film but I cant get a good copy yet. Magpapakabait ako sa Pasko para maka score ako ng DVD copy nito. Puro copy sa sine pa lang ang nasa Quaipo

THE CLEARING- Hostage drama flick starring Robert Redford.

Gera na 'to!

Taken from INQ7. net , Jul. 21, 2004:

The VRB (Videogram Regulatory Board) citation notwithstanding, the Philippines was still included in the IIPA's 2004 "priority watch list" of the world's worst violators of intellectual property rights.

Aside from the Philippines, 16 other nations made it to the list: Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon, Poland, Russian Federation, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Pirated products in many formats are available virtually everywhere," including the video piracy "hotspots" (Quiapo in Manila, Greenhills in San Juan, ABC Mall in Makati City, and Cubao in Quezon City), it said.

From abs-cbnnews.com November 23, 2004:

OMB chairman Eduardo Manzano said in a press conference on Monday that, “Delisting is a tall order. Malapit na ang Pasko, make sure you get your stuff while hindi pa nag sisiksikan kina Amir...

.Fighter in the Wind- a film based son the life of Choi Bae-dal. Dubbed the "Toughest man in the World" because of his extraordinary skills in the martial arts.nice DVD copy. Good subs.
Alfie- Starring Jude law. A remake of the 1966 movie starring Michael Caine. Tunkol s babaero at kung anong nangyayari sa kanila kapag nabisto. Probably Promo copy pa lang. Look for the original among the the classics (the flat ones with cardboard cover) I think I saw one somewhere.
Birth- with Nicole Kidman and that controversial bathtub scene with 10 year old co-star Cameron Bright. About a widow who believes her husband has come back in the form of a young boy. Probably Promo copy pa lang.
One Missed Call-Takashi Miike's take on the horror genre. It may not be one of his best, but definitely worth the buck. I personally want to watch this in the theaters first before deciding t get my own copy.
FarenHYPE 9/11- A documentary that disputes the factuality and filmmaking ethics of whistle blower Michael Moore. Haven't seen it. Intersting. Sabagay, dami ngang fabricated na kwento na isiningit sa kanyang mga documentaries.
Fight Club-Iknow this is an old one. But heck, this is one of my favorite movies of all time, now it comes with very good packaging. The cover art is the logo printed over paper packaging tied with strings, you know like a custom made bar of soap. Just like the original discs. Plus there are no silly blurbs in the back, just a brief synopsis. If your'e looking to get rid of your silly, obviously fake cover, get this one. It will, most likely, not have the special features.
Macross Zero- I saw a preview fro this one in one stall. Wow, the animation was pretty tight. Parang pinagandang Macross na TV series. Parang 'motion captured' yung mga planes. I don't know much about the story though, but worth checking out.
New Police Story- Jackie Chan's latest action bonanza. Watch him at his best, fighting 3 bad guys at once, scaling buildings, getting his ribs broken, you know, fun stuff like that. DVD na yung quality. Warning though subs are still very roughly translated
Feng Shui-Kris Aquino. Chito Rono. Horror. Bleh. The DVD copy is available na. The subtitles are actually good.

Stay Away from "Alexander"!

I haven't seen the movie myself, but oh my! I haven't heard a single good review on this movie! Kung sanang mayroon kahit magandang review about the epic battle scenes or the riveting drama o kung anong ka-ek ekan ang nagpaganda at least sa napaka intriguing na buhay ni Alexander the Great...pero wala.

I learned about the lackluster performance of this movies from the critics standpoint early on pa lang sa internet. Actually screenshots pa lang nawalan na ako ng gana. Parang costume piece siya na mala Monty Python. One very important task a period movie must accomplish forst is that it must make the viewer "believe" that its a movie about the era, not a movie 'pretending' to be about that era with costumes and props. Sayang si Ollie Stone. Comback movie pa sana niya to after an almost 10 year hiatus. Balik na lang siya sa butas na pinanggalingan niya. At least we'll always have Platoon.
Hay nako, wait for the stalls to be filled with this trash. Personally kahit umabot lang ng P30 ang DVD di ko pa rin bibilhin yan!

New Stuff Week 1

Eto yung mga bagong DVD na nakita ko sa Quiapo kahapon. Medyo magulo dun kahapon kasi kaka-raid lang ni Pareng Edu.. Malinaw na ang mga ito pero check pa rin for scratches. Subs are good too.

The Incredibles- Brad Bird Rocks!!! Before you go out and rush over to Quiapo, please be informed that kuha sa sine lang ang copy nito. Usually the DVD copy comes in mga 3 weeks to a month. So patience lang…

TaeGukGi- follow up ng Shiri. Groomed to be the next Best Foreign Picture sa Oscars (as if I care). It is the story of two brothers and their forced recruitment into the American-Korean war. An Excellent film. Parang Saving Private Ryan na Korean Version.

The Ghost aka. Dead Friend- I haven’t seen this one pero you can get a good DVD copy almost anywhere.

Three: Extremes- I waited a long time for this to be out. This is an anthology (3in1) by directors Takashi Miike (Box), Fruit Chan (Dumplings) and my favorite Chan Wook Park (Cut).

Garden State- critically acclaimed comedy/drama by Zach Braff starring Natalie Portman. Promo Copy pa lang sa Quiapo so just wait for the DVD copies to come.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle- dalawang “junkies with the munchies” looking for a burger na mahirap hanapin. A quirky white comedy by Danny Lenier starring an Oriental and Indian. Apparently this movie daw is trying to break the mold of “typecasting” Asians as geeks and or nerds and uses them as drug addicts instead. Maganda daw eh, I haven’t seen it pero I will…eventually.

Mura lang, boss

Welcome to Boss DVD. Your guide to the wonderful world of movies, concerts and TV series released in the worldwide accepted format of DVD. This servers as a guide for you to know what's available what's not. What's hot and what sucks. Pirated DVDs can be tricky, copies are usually good but you occasionally get a dud, then you have to replace it--that is if they'll let you.
I usually frequent the DVD stalls of Quiapo and Makati Square and have developed the skills(I'm still learning, though) of bargaining and finding the perfect copy.

I'll be back with the titles soon.
